The Navy Dental Corps goal is to prevent and take care of any dental condition that may interfere with the performance of the soldiers in duty. Also, navy dentists can support their fellow Sailors and Marines in disaster reliefs and humanitarian assistance.
As a result, we can name three of the most remarkable dentists who have received the medal of honor.
First, we have Dr. Ben L. Salomon. As a front-line surgeon during World War II, he was able to evacuate and save several wounded soldiers meanwhile Japanese soldiers were invading his hospital. Consequently, he died and received the medal of honor.
Secondly, Alexander Gordon Lyle, the dentist who got his medal by saving Cpl. Thomas Regan. In detail Alexander perform a surgery under bombardment.
Finally, Weedon Osborne was prized with the medal of honor for throwing himself in to the crossfire of the World War I to save the wounded. Obviously, he died trying to get a hurt soldier out of the field.
As we share these inspirational stories for Memorial Day, we honor them and all who have died while serving the US military.
